Davis, 66-67, who I flew RU21s with in 69-70. You have him listed in Houma, LA, but my latest info shows him in New Brockton, AL, just up the road from Ft. Rucker. If I hear from him, I'll have him contact you with update info. I think I had a couple classmates that flew with the Hornets, but didn't see their names (66-19/21).

Comment: I'm really lost here. I know my brother Herman Serna was with the 116th AHC. But that's all I know about the 116th AHC. I've been doing some searching trying to find more information. I just can't figure it out. What is the 116th AHC Beekeeper? Is it the 116th AHC Hornets, Stingers, Yellow Jackets and Wasps? Or is it the 116th AHC HORNETS:subgroups Stingers, Yellow Jackets, and Wasps? HELP!!!!!!!!! All I want to do is make a retro AR15 that was used in the time he was in with the images of the 116th AHC Hornets engraved on one side of the receiver. I have already acquired a Hornets patch. So I have that image to work with. I'm looking for another image that my brother was associated with and that image will go on the other side. How was the 116th set up? Was my brother a Stinger, Yellow Jacket or Wasp and were they part of the Hornets? Or was he a Hornet and part of the Beekeepers? This is so confusing. HELP!!!!!!

I'm building a retro AR15 in memory of my brother Herman Serna who served with the 116th ahc Hornets between 1960-1970. I'm sorry to say he did not make it home. I was hoping to find a clearer image so I can have it engraved on the AR15 lower receiver. They have to transfer the image to some computer language stuff. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Comment: Flight, the grunt who made a video on Easter Sunday 1971, John Wolf, has revised it. He has a lot more in this one about the 116th. Below in a guestbooke entry I saw a note (don't have it in front of me now) from someone who said he probably didn't fly in this flight because all he saw were Wasps. Remember we mixed platoons in flights a lot, you can't see the one John's shooting from, and you don't see all the aircraft. Anyway, John did a good job on his revision. Here is my reply to his note to me. Hello again John, I like what you've done with your YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSIgvM9EoyA). It is much more comprehensive and detailed than the first two versions I saw. I see you've gotten a lot more information from the 116th Hornets. That's good. As I told you earlier, I was almost certainly in that flight as a Hornet, as I was back in the 14th Aviation Battalion at that time flying for the Hornets on my second tour. I just pulled out my old flight records and see that I logged 9.5 flight hours on that day (April 11). Chances are really slim that I wasn't in that flight. Also, I'm quite certain the crew chief you got a good photo of was in the "Yellow Jackets" platoon (my platoon) and I remember flying with him a lot. I'm sorry, but after 37 years the name is no longer on the tip of my tongue. Many of our CA's were "mixed" with aircraft from both lift platoons (the Yellow Jackets and the Wasps). I do know that Shark 7, who you credit but don't identify, was WO1 Fred Thompson. See his bio at http://www.174ahc.org/bio-16.htm. If you care for a few corrections, I have only two. In the opening text, you have a typo with "Shawdow." I believe that should be "Shadow." The only real error I saw was during the credit for Wayne Baggett at the end. It should be 174th AHC instead of 174th ARN (looks too much like ARVN). I suspect you meant AVN, but AHC would be more correct. Other than that, I didn't see any other errors. Good job. I'll also post this to our 174th AHC listserver for the other guys to see it. Thanks for the update. Jim McDaniel Hornet 20, 1971 Shark 4, 1967-68 174th Webmaster jim.mcd@cox.net

Comment: I went to the You Tube site Jim McDaniel noted and viewed the video posted by John Wolf. I don't think I was flying on that CA since most of the lift ships were Wasp ships. But this is the first video I have ever seen of one of our CAs, so it brought back a lot of memories of the A.O. out to the west of Duc Pho. Thanks to John for posting the video and Jim for pointing the way to find it. Hello to Mathew Arnaudo. I'm happy to hear your son is safely back from Iraq. I helped search for Dan Dye, Roy Barnes, and Pat Brannon when their ship went down in October 1971. At the time, due to the hurricane, there were only two liftships available for the search. Major Smith and I took one and searched to the south and southwest of Chu Lai and Fermon Weedon took the other and searched to the north and northwest of Chu Lai. The plan, if we did not find them that morning, was to get all the ships in the company ready after the huuricane and to search with all the flyable ships until we found them. But their ship was found by gunships from one of the units still at Chu Lai. That was a very sad day. Jim Ashley

Comment: This is very cool, I have video's of you guys flying my unit for a CA on YouTube. There is a door gunner that I got a great shot of that I always wondered who he was. Also, the day the CA video was shot was Easter 1971, 1/20 A Co. lost a lot of guys that day and the Chaplain got shot down, think his Loach took a hit from a 51. I will go back and edit the video and add your unit to it. Would love to hear from anyone that drove me or my unit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCmC6ymXf_c&feature=PlayList&p=8CBF2E0D4E59F737&index=0 WolfieRed1

Comment: Hello fellow Hornets, Happy New Year to all. It has been a long time since I have been on the the website. I have read back and recognize quit a few names from my time in the 116th (April thru Dec 71). To Rick Wardley I served the same time as Danny Dye but didn't know him that well because he was in the 2nd flight platoon and I was in the 1st. I do know he went down with one of the best pilots in our unit at the time Mr. Barnes. They were doing what the 116th was known for and that was volunteering to help out fellow soldiers in need. Hello to Jim McDaniel, Tom Clausen, Bill Chavez, John Barrera, Grant Isom, Steve Smith, Mike Campbell, and Jim Ashley. I often think about the fellow soldiers I served with especially recently as my soon served a tour in Iraq. He has returned home safe but as all of us who serve in a hostile environment, changed. Welcome home brothers Mathew Arnaudo, Yellowjacket '0813' New Boston, MI

Comment: Hi, I've trying to find out information on Daniel Grover Dye. We were best friends from the time we were 5 years old. Danny what the most fun loving guy i knew. The last time I say him was sometime in 1971 when we went to the beach and sand skied behind Larry (Fuzzy) Gate's Scout-truck. I would like to talk to his Army buddies that knew him and locate his younger sister Sheryl and older brother Frank. It amazing what information is now available on the internet. Today I found the only picture I've ever seen of him while on duty in Vietnam. Rick Wardley Meadow Vista, CA

Comment: Hello, first I'd like to thank all you Hornets/Wasps, Stingers and Yellowjackets for your service and, WELCOME HOME! Next, I'd like to find any who knew/flew with my Dad, WO-2 Pat Emery while he flew with the 116th. Dad was transferred from the "Rattlers" to the 116th sometime in Feb, '66. As far as I know he flew slicks, but he may have flown guns. Any info is greatly appreciated. Finally, thanks to Mr. Al sever for his book, XIN LOI, VIETNAM. It's a great read. One rarely gets the war from a Crew Chief's side, and I'm really enjoying the book. Lastly, I'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a helathy, happy '08. May God bless you all, "P"

Comment: Hello everyone! Happy Thanksgiving! I am the creator and illustrator of a website called Vietnam Hueys http://vietnam-hueys.tripod.com/ The purpose of my site is to illustrate Hueys in accurate colors and markings from various units that served in Vietnam. I have added a page to my site about the 116th AHC and have a couple of illustrations of 116th ships posted. I would like to add more illstrations of 116th aircraft, and am looking for information on slicks from any period, but particularly 1965-68 era ships, and 1970-71 ships. I am also looking for information on Stinger gunships from any period. If you would like to contribute nose art photos or other information on markings, please contact me!

Comment: Hello Fellow Hornets, After all these years, I have made contact with John Baca and at the present time John is going through stuff with the VA. I beleive most of us that have been back have gone through the same process with the VA. John and I share an experience that will be imprinted in our minds forever. John Baca was my assigned gunner on this recon mission and on board were 2 Colonels both twins!! One was a commander of an Artillery unit and the other commanded an Infantry unit. As we were flying tree top level we began to take AK47 fire. We took several rounds with one round penetrating the L/H chin bubble and struck the Pilot in the ankle and another round struck the center counsel sending glass into the eyes of our co pilot. Needless to say we momentarily lost control of the aircraft but managed to get away from the hot area, landed, pulled the injured pilot from the seat and put him in the rear. Meanwhile, John Baca took the front seat and assisted flying the aircraft back to Chu Lai. By the time we got to Chu Lai the co pilot had cleared his eyes to the point where he could control the aircraft and landed in the reventment. John and I are trying to make contact with anyone that has first hand knowledge of who the pilots were. Please submit any leads that you might have to my email address. Thanks for any assistance. Happy Veteran's Day to all and please take a moment of silence for our brothers that made the ultimate sacrifice for this great country. JJ Garcia 116th Hornets Mar70-Feb71

Bruce and I attended flight school together (65-13), flew together in combat, were tent mates, and remained close friends with our families over the years. I'm sad to report that Bruce passed away last night from pancreatic cancer. Bruce survived other cancer problems and was he was convinced he would beat this one until God called him home. > > Bruce is survived by his wife, Beverly, who was also his high school sweetheart, and four sons from a previous marriage.> > Please let other Hornets know about Bruce's passing and remember him and his family in their prayers. Comment: Another reunion has come and gone, another chance for those willing and wanting to make an effort to reach out to those who served with them on foriegn soil so very long algo. I attended my fifth reunion and as always was amazed by the brotherhood that you men share. I watched as Generals stood side by side with Spec. 4's shaking hands and in many cases sharing hugs. I watched as two young women whose father was KIA meet with several who served with their dad. Watching the tears they shared with their father's comrade I was reminded of my own emotional journey just a few short years ago. The light in these veterans' eyes, the laughter, and the loyality that brings them again and again to these reunions is phanominal. The highlight for me was to do the "Missing Man" toast on behalf of those we lost from this unit. I salute those of you who made the extra effort to attend this year. I encourage others to make plans to attend next year. We aren't getting any younger fellows. I will be leaving in a few weeks to attend the 25th anniversary ceremonies at the wall. I will be reading my brother and his crew members' names during the days of name reading at the wall. I am so honored to be a part of it and because of you I have the courage to do this. There is a void in our hearts. We attended the 116th AHC Hornet reunion in Branson, Mo. over the week-end. I am not sure if I can put into words how grateful and honored we were to meet all of the 116th that were there. You greeted us with open arms and let us cry on your shoulders. You listened and understood our pain. You wiped our tears. You cried with us. You held our hands and wrapped your arms around us. To those who did not know our father thank you for your understanding. To those who did know our father thank you for your memories and I thank all of you for the love you showed us. A special thank you to Tom Clausen for being the man you are. The void in my heart is smaller. To Linda Clance thank you for being there for us and all you did to make it easier on us. Comment: Hey Doug, Things have been good with me and my family. I have been in touch with Don Chapman. He lives in Florida. I met him last year at the VHPA reunion in Washington DC. I also met with Gary Wilfley, John Barrera, Roger Price, and Mike Barlow. We all had a great time in DC. This will be my second reunion and I'm really looking forward to it. It is getting harder for me to remember all the guys we served with but going to these reunion helps to shake the cob webs loose. I'm with you on the pink bellies!!! I couldn't handle them either. Doug where do you live at and what have you been up to? I live in Northern Minnesota and I work for a power company called Minnesota Power. I been with this company for 30 years now. Every now and again I think about retirering but I really like my job and company. They treat me really well and I still enjoy coming to work. Take care and keep in touch. Tom C

Comment: I'll get it right yet guys!! I was in 'nam in 71-72. The 116th AHC and Stingers in 71 until the company stood down. Not enough time in country to go home. I got orders to report to the 173rd in two weeks across the flight line when everybody else left. I moved in the commanding officer's old hooch until that two weeks was up. The MP's checked on me from time to time because I had the only light on in the whole company. Sorry for all the confusion on the years!! Please cut me some slack. I'm older, slower, and having memory lapses I guess!!

If anyone knows of any of these guys or anybody else I served with, I would sure enjoy talking to them! I just ran into a pilot who told me about this site! Thanks to whoever started it and keeping it going! I was the last one left in Da Nang when the company stood down. I didnt have enough time in country to get to go home with the other guys! I stayed in the commanding officers hooch after everyone left for two weeks then my orders were to report across the flight line to the 173rd! Memories I'll never forget! Comment: Although I haven't heard from them lately, George Cathy, Tom Callahan, Rick Price and I are 40 years older and I know I am grateful for the 14,600 sunrises and sunsets since our faithful day in the Iron Trangle. I suspect Terry Henry, Mike Atkinson, and John Holman are glad we stuck around while they "lollygaged" in the ditch. A battalion of NVA and two Stinger ships, that's a fair fight, but we came pretty close to losing that day. George, who said you couldn't catch a bullet in your teeth. Tom and I have our scars, but damn, 40 years!!! I drink my coffee with a grin on my face every day I see the sunrise.

Smith, James Portwood Jr.and my brother Herman Serna names were sent on the Stardust mission which was launched on February 7, 1999 carrying the two microchips. Two copies of each chip were installed on the spacecraft (for a total of four chips). Two of the microchips (#1 & #2) are inside the Sample Return Capsule, and will return back to Earth with the capsule in the year 2006. The other two chips are on the spacecraft body and will remain in space forever. Does anyone know who entered their names? It had to happen back in 1998. Thank you whoever you are.

Comment: Yelow Jackets Crew Cheif 69 & 70 Cu Chi & Chu Lai I just found this web site and see a number of familiar names. I do have a request. I was told that David Gunderson's daughter was looking for anyone who might have pictures of her dad. Some of you might remember David or as we called him "Gunny". He was my crew cheif and I was his gunner in the Yellow Jackets when I first shipped into the 116th from the 4th infantry. Gunny later moved into the Stingers and I took over our ship as crew cheif. Well anyway "Gunny's" gunship was on a gun run when both pilots were hit and gunny along with his gunner tried to take control of the ship. The gunship crashed and his gunner was thrown clear, the two pilots were lost and Gunny past away later. He was a great freind. I do have a number of photo's I found of Gunny so if you know anyway to make contact with his daughter email me please, I would like to forward these pictures to her. She was just a baby when Gunny say her last on R&R in Hawaii in '69. Thank you.

Comment: Weldon, I don't know if you rememeber me I am but I remember that day you went down. Gunny was my first crew cheif when I came into the Yellow Jackets from the 4th infrantry division. I was his gunner and he taught me how to maintain our slick as a crew cheif. Gunny moveed from the Yellow JAckets to the stingers as a Crew cheif and I my MOS was changed to crew cheif and I took over our ship. The day you went down my slick was in for 100 hour maintenenace so I was down that day. What I remember is getting word your gun ship was on a run when Fox & McDonald were both hit. As I think I remember the events I believe you and Gunny tried to put the seat releases but it happen so fast and your were so low you couldn't get to the ship controls fast enough to pull the ship out and it crashed throwing you from the ship. Gunny was, well I'll just say critical and heading in on a medivac to the MASH unit. I saw you in the recouvery unit and at that time you were not able to move but talked a bit about the crash. I remeber when Gunny went to Hawaii to see his wife and new babay, he was a proud DAD and a great freind. This is the first time I have ever discussed this since that day with anyone from our unit. This brings back alot of emotion even after over thirty years. I have a number of pictures of Gunny I found when I pulled alblums from the attic from the Vet Nam days after I found this web site. My memory is a little rough these days but I think thats how it went. I always wondered how you were doing, its great to hear from you. If you would like some pictures of Gunny email me and I would be happy to send you copies. God Bless

Comment: June 1969 Cu Chi, I came into the unit from the 4th infantry division as door gunner for David Gunderson in the Yellow Jackets, who was later lost when Davids stinger gun ship was shot down North of Cu Chi. I was at that point crew cheif myself in the Yellow Jackets still in Cu Chi. I left after my first tour was up and state side for 30 days and came back to Cu Chi to find that while I was gone the unit had moved to Chi Lai. So I continued my 2nd tour in Chu Lai until December of 1970 when I got shipped home early. I found this web site about a year or so ago and finally though I would drop a general note. My memory isn't what it use to be but I think I remember a few of the names that have inserted comments over the past months. Also I am sure I could dig up a few pictures of I think John Baca and others.

Comment: Hi, I am a military spouse who is researching ID Tags/Dog Tags for a book I am writing. I am trying to reach active duty, veterans, and family members who have personal stories about (and images of) their Dog Tags. I have a website: www.dogtaghistory.com, and on it there are questionnaires for those that are interested in sharing their stories. Here is the angle: The 100 year anniversary of the official use of military personal identity tags, affectionately known as Dog Tags, recently passed without fanfare. We are currently in a war where the Dog Tag is once again a highly personal item to warriors in every service and their families. Each Dog Tag carries its own human interest story, and is much more than a piece of metal with words and numbers imprinted on it. Receiving it, hanging it around the neck, and feeling it is at once a silent statement of commitment. The tag itself individualizes the human being who wears it within a huge and faceless organization. The armed forces demand obedience, commitment, and duty to a higher cause, but the Dog Tag which hangs privately within their shirts, close to their chests, becomes a part of them. In a way it brings comfort to that fear of every Soldier facing death: I do not want to be forgotten; I will not be unknown. Understanding and sharing the history of Dog Tags and their deeply personal meaning in today's world is at the core of this book. Please check out the site to get more information. Any help getting this information out there would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Ginger Cucolo

Comment: ALL HORNETS, Thought I had better bring something up about the Branson Reunion. here are a limited number of rooms at the hotel where we are having the Reunion. There are a few cheaper rooms and there are some more expensive rooms. So book early. There are additional hotels in the area, but there is no guarantee on the rooms or prices. I only have two Lkae View rooms left. here are other rooms. So once I have these rooms booked you will need to go to brandfordonthelake.com and book your own room. Sorry, but without knowing how many are coming, and this being a first ALL HORNET Reunion in sometime. I uasn't sure of how big a hotel to book. Dan

Comment: Attention in the company area!! Just wanted to know if anyone out there in the Hornets flightline that served during 70-71 can relate to this story. Chu Lai- I had just returned from a flare mission and when I got my hooch I decided to heat some of those bean and weenies. We all remember those, right guys! Anyway, I walked to the rear of the hooch where the day room was located and all of a sudden I hear this huge boom and the hooch shook! I was in my skivies and fell to the ground. I heard someone scream "Incoming!" and I started to low crawl to the bunker and as I did so I got splinters all over my knees from the floor. It was only one bang but nevertheless I moved quickly to the bunker. Once inside I heard the all clear. Then I heard the guys outside saying to one another that someone tried to frag the maintenance sergeant. Someone had thrown a frag between the hooches and injured some pilots that were playing cards in their dayroom. My sleeing area was right behind the pilot's dayroom and lucky for me that I just happened to be in the rear otherwise I would have gotten killed that night. I noticed shrapenal all through my pillow and my footlocker. Most of us were in our underwear when they ordered us to form up in front of the orderly.I think I was rotating back home shortly after that and never heard on what happened. Doe this ring a bell with anyone out there?
